Wolves tipped to cash in on £27.5m flop as Europa League club lines up bid

Besiktas are reportedly preparing an official bid for a Wolves attacker.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are planning to sell Goncalo Guedes this summer and a Europa League club has officially registered their interest.

The Old Gold are a little light in attack following the departures of Matheus Cunha and Pablo Sarabia to Manchester United and Al-Arabi but Vitor Pereira is keen to offload more dead wood. Guedes, who started just 10 Premier League matches last season, is primed to be sold to raise further funds for Pereira to make his own mark on the squad.

Turkish publication Takvim reports Besiktas are eager to improve their prospects in the Super Lig by strengthening their squad after four successive seasons without a league title. To kickstart their business, the Black Eagles have added Guedes to their shortlist.

A bid is already being prepared by Besiktas, with a fee of around €11 million (£9.3m) touted. That would represent a significant loss for Wolves as Guedes cost £27.5 million to sign from Valencia in 2022. As he’s only started 18 times in the Premier League, that means every English top-flight start has cost over £1.5 million.

It’s a great shame it hasn’t worked out for Guedes at Wolves as he has only made 13 direct goal contributions in 51 matches across all competitions. Although Wolves are making a significant loss, at least they’re recouping some of the fee they paid to sign a new right-sided forward.

Wolves have already signed new winger

The Old Gold have already completed their first signing of the summer transfer window, acquiring the services of Celta Vigo winger Fer Lopez. Although Wanderers haven’t disclosed the fee, it’s understood that around £19.5 million was paid to land the Spaniard.

Managed by Gestifute, run by super agent Jorge Mendes and with strong ties to the Old Gold, Lopez is seen as a big talent. Although he doesn’t have the experience to immediately take the reins from Cunha, it’s hoped he can gradually progress towards reaching his potential under Pereira’s wing.

The Madrid-born forward, predominantly a right winger but also capable of playing in attacking midfield or on the left, is an excellent dribbler who loves to cut onto his preferred left foot. Lopez tends to turn away from his man effectively and has decent vision.

Although Lopez hasn’t racked up much senior experience just yet, he impressed with Celta’s B side, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists in 51 matches. It’s also promising that he managed a goal every 334 minutes in La Liga last term, while his 2.43 dribbles per 90 minutes rank him among the top 12 per cent of players in his position.

Not only that, but Lopez’s dribble success of 58.1 per cent was better than four-fifths of fellow wingers in the Spanish top flight and his 2.69 shots per 90 minutes was bettered only by 17.9 per cent. Those statistics, albeit from a pretty small sample size, are very promising indeed.

Several more attackers needed

Signing only Lopez in attack would be insufficient as Wolves also need to replace Sarabia and Guedes. The funds are certainly there as Lopez cost less than a third of the fee raked in for Cunha, while Guedes’ departure could free up further funds.

It’s not just the flanks that need strengthening, as Pereira is determined to sign another striker. Jorgen Strand Larsen was so heavily relied upon last season as the club’s only proper out-and-out centre-forward, so Wolves are keen to bring in a fresh face in that position.
