Wolves to slash wage bill as ’£90,000-a-week’ flop eyed for ambitious Besiktas summer transfer
The latest transfer news as an out-of-favour Wolves attacker is targeted by Besiktas.
Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Goncalo Guedes’ nightmare could soon come to an end as Besiktas are reportedly considering a summer approach.
Guedes, who signed from Valencia in 2022 for around £27.5 million, has failed to live up to expectations at Molineux and is widely considered a flop. The former Portugal international has contributed just seven goals and six assists in 51 appearances for Wolves across all competitions, costing around £2.1 million per direct goal involvement.
Loan moves to Benfica and Villarreal in 2023 and 2024 were supposed to help Guedes reignite the scintillating form he achieved at Valencia but he still struggled. Last season was actually Guedes’ most productive in a Wolves shirt as he racked up 33 of his 51 total appearances, scoring five and assisting five, but he’s still not in Vitor Pereira’s plans.
Besiktas eye Guedes swoop
Turkish publication Fotomac reports Besiktas have been keeping an eye on Guedes’ situation and have placed the forward on their summer shortlist. The Super Lig club’s hierarchy are said to be ‘testing the waters’ for the 28-year-old and are initially considering a loan move.
Besiktas are also looking into the possibility of including an obligation to buy Guedes at the end of the loan and head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given the deal the green light. Although it’s not advanced at this stage, Guedes moving to Besiktas could make great sense as he’s not wanted by Wolves and he could do with the guarantee of starts elsewhere.
Guedes departure would ease wage bill as Pereira eyes several deals
If Guedes does leave Wanderers this summer, the club will benefit financially, even if Besiktas’ obligation to buy is for a fee far inferior to the £27.5 million Wolves paid. According to Capology, the winger is currently on around £90,000 per week, a huge wage considering he’s often warming the bench.
With that extra wage budget potentially soon to be available, Wolves could get a little more creative in the transfer market. The extra wages saved, coupled with the big-money fees received for Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri earlier this summer, provides Pereira with a tidy budget to work with.
Some of the funds have already been spent on winger Fer Lopez, who joined from Celta Vigo for £19.5 million, while Jorgen Strand Larsen’s £2.5 million loan - also from Celta - has turned permanent for a further £23 million.
There’s still plenty to play with even after those deals and Wolves are expected to motor on with more incoming business before the start of the new season. Fluminense winger Jhon Arias is closing in on an £18.1 million move following intense negotiations and Pereira is understood to be keen on signing Almeria right-back Marc Pubill.
A new centre-back is also desired as Pereira prefers to operate with a back three and the current depth isn’t seen as sufficient. There could be more movement up front, too, as Pereira wants another out-and-out centre-forward to compete with Strand Larsen.
