Latest Wolves transfer news as a former Birmingham City and Sheffield United striker gets heavily linked with a Molineux move.

Wolves are in 'advanced' transfer talks to sign Southampton striker Che Adams on a free transfer, according to a report.

Football Transfers are reporting that Adams is a 'key target' for Wolves and it looks like they are the side leading the race to sign him. In the report they say that talks between the club and the player's representatives are 'progressing positively'.

Adams has been linked with a move to Molineux over the last year but there has also been reported interested from Bournemouth, Everton and Nottingham Forest with a £12m bid rejected. The 27-year-old is out of contract in the summer and that would suit Wolves because Gary O'Neil admitted recently he does not envisage any big money signings this summer without selling anyone.

According to the Daily Echo which covers Southampton, Adams was offered a three-and-a-half year deal to stay at St Mary's and would also get the vice captaincy. Back in September, Adam's current boss Russell Martin said it was the player's 'prerogative' as to whether he signed a new deal or not.

As for the player's official stance, he has not yet given a clear indication as to where his future lies beyond this season. A contract offer has been on the table for a player that has been with Southampton for five seasons, but it hasn't been signed.

"Southampton will always play a part in our lives and especially my daughter's life," said Adams in an interview back in March with Southampton. "A club like Southampton is a Premier League team.

"Any team that's come here this season can see how well established and how big the club is, in terms of fanbase and in terms of the staff around the place as well.

"It's a Premier League club. For me personally, it's just about - and I said it in a statement at the end of last season - getting the club back to where it should be again because that's where we deserve to be."

Adams is currently preparing for what might be his last game with the club as Southampton play Wolves' West Midlands rivals West Brom in the Championship play-offs. The 25-cap Scotland international missed the first leg with a calf injury but there is a hope within the Southampton camp that he can return and steer them towards the play-off final.

He has scored 17 goals in 45 games in all competitions for the Saints this year, giving him a total of 48 in the 190 matches he's played since joining from Birmingham City in 2019 for a reported £15m. Adams' record in the Premier League is 25 goals and 23 assists in 124 games. His future may not be sorted straight away as Scotland qualified for EURO 2024 and so shortly after the play-offs have concluded he will be gearing up for a major international tournament.
