Gerrard has revealed he has held one-to-one talks with midfielder Douglas Luiz amid talks over a new contract.

Luiz has been linked with a move away from Villa Park this summer due to his uneasy contract situation.

But Villa are keen to keep him around, and they are attempting to address his contract situation, already starting talks.

In the meantime, Gerrard has spoken about Luiz after his goal on Tuesday night, saying: “I had a chat with Dougie, an interesting chat, we had a good conversation, really happy with what he has shown and I thought he backed his training performance.

“Pleased with his goal, pleased with his performance.”

Aston Villa look set to sanction an exit for youngster Ben Chrisene.

Chrisene has an admirer in Gerrard, linking up with the first-team squad for their tour of Australia ahead of the season.

But at 18 years of age, he is in need of more first-team experience, something he is not set to get north of the border.

According to The Athletic, Chrisene is now set to join Kilmarnock on a season-long loan.
