Aston Villa secured their passage to the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers, but it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Villans.

Steven Gerrard put out a strong side for the game, and would have been disappointed when Dion Charles put the League One side ahead after 24 minutes.

Villa equalised through Douglas Luiz’s goal direct from a corner, before adding three more goals, through Danny Ings (pen), Lucas Digne and Leon Bailey in the second half to complete the victory.

Here’s how BirminghamWorld rated the Villa players at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Emiliano Martinez - 7

Made a couple of saves but didn’t have a great deal to do. Not much he could have done for the goal.

Ashley Young - 7

Solid performance from an experienced head in a strong Villa line-up.

Calum Chambers - 6

Questions could be asked of his defending for the goal, but an otherwise decent performance.

Tyrone Mings - 7

Defended well when called up but didn’t have much to do.

Lucas Digne - 7

Played well and capped his performance off with a goal, although you do have to question the Bolton goalkeeper. All-round game solid.

Douglas Luiz - 8*

Man of the match for us, Luiz scored directly from a corner, as he’d seemingly done in training 24 hours before.

Would have felt hard-done by to be hooked, especially as he’s hardly featured in the league this season.

Boubacar Kamara - 6

Never really got into the game, and his performance was filled with consistent fouls on Bolton players. Frankly a mystery how he never got booked.

John McGinn - 5

Villa’s new captain didn’t have a great night. Gave the ball away far too much.

Philippe Coutinho - 7

Better night for the Brazilian. Might have had a goal on another night and the pass through to Ings for the penalty was exquisite.

Danny Ings - 8

Very good performance from Ings, capped off with a goal and an assist. Could have had more, too.

Ollie Watkins - 6

Game seemed to pass him by. Had little to no impact on the ball and seemed very frustrated when he was subbed after 70 minutes.

Subs

Leon Bailey - 7

Staked his claim for a start against West Ham on Sunday with an excellent 19-minute cameo. Great goal too.

Jacob Ramsey - 6

Didn’t see much of the ball after coming on but looked okay in his few touches.

Emiliano Buendia - 6

Came on at the same time as Ramsey and claimed an assist for Bailey’s goal, but didn’t really have the ball that much.

Cameron Archer - 6

Would have been frustrated to only get 8 minutes on the pitch but looked bright in his few touches.

Tim Iroegbunam - N/A

Didn’t have enough time on the pitch to make much of a difference, game was all but won when he came on.

Unused Subs: Olsen, Feeney, Cash, Konsa.
