The two sides were unable to break the deadlock throughout a turgid 90 minutes at Elland Road as Steven Gerrard’s side were unable to take advantage of playing against ten men for almost the entirity of the second-half.

Leeds winger Luis Sinisterra was shown a second yellow card just minutes after the restart as he was cautioned for blocking Villa’s attempts to take a quick free-kick.

Despite dominating possession and creating a number of half-chances, Villa were left frustrated by the dogged and committed defending of their hosts and had to settle for a point.

The result leaves Gerrard’s men sat in the lower half of the Premier League table and they are now just two points clear of the relegation zone ahead of next Monday’s visit to Nottingham Forest.

Aston Villa supporters have delivered a strong response to the solitary point picked up.

Responding to the club’s full-time post on Facebook, supporter Paul Greenaway described the performance as ‘horrendous’.

He said: “I’m sorry but if you ever needed to see a performance that tells you a manager is out of his depth is that.

“40 minutes against 10 men and we never looked like scoring. Shocking. Gerrard out.

“And by the way Watkins was abysmal. Horrendous performance.”

Striker Watkins and Gerrard received more criticism in other replies to the post, with Charlie Debrincat saying: “If someone knocks at my door with 15m for Watkins I’d gladly wrap him up and hand over Ings for free too.

“Absolutely awful this season. If we can’t score goals against a 10 man leeds team we won’t win games this season. Where’s the attractive football we were promised by Gerrard? Embarrassing.”

Bradley Smith suggested Gerrard’s men made life more difficult for themselves when they faced a ten-man Leeds side.

“A team with no personality, no confidence to attack and try different ideas,” he said.

“This should have been an easy three points after the sending off but once again we make it harder than it needs to be.”

However, Gerrard did receive some support from Indy Singh Panchi as he replied with: “Dominated the game. I’m not of those fans asking for change Gerrard will get it right.”

But the former Rangers boss received more questions on the club’s Twitter account, with Conor Foran replying to Villa’s full-time tweet with: “If the owners have any sort of ambition, he’ll be gone in the morning. Has more than enough with players to the ability to win these games.”

And fellow supporter Andy B added: “That was awful, can someone at the club please explain what our plan is?

“Other than leaving better players on the bench and not giving our young players a chance? We’ll end up losing/ruining a great crop of players if we carry on like this.”
