Former Aston Villa forward Paul Merson has admitted that this weekend’s Premier League clash with Leeds United could be make-or-break for the Midlands club.

Steven Gerrard’s side endured a poor start to the new campaign but picked up four points from two matches before the international break.

With a number of key injuries also troubling them, a victory at Elland Road will be important to kickstart their season.

Speaking to sportskeeda, Merson said: “Aston Villa pulled off a big result against Southampton but if they lose here, they’re back to square one.

“Their victory against Southampton was important, but the game was dire. If Steven Gerrard had lost that game, serious questions would’ve been asked.

“They did win, however, and fair play to them. They’ll have to go and grind one out again this weekend.”

The Villans currently sit 15th in the Premier League table and could go above the Whites if they can claim all three points on Sunday.

Jesse Marsch’s side started well but have struggled since their surprise 3-0 victory over Chelsea and fans could start to worry if they are on the losing side once again.

Merson added: “Leeds are a bit dull at the moment, and this is a big game for them. If they lose this game, their good start goes out the window.

“Neither team has played particularly well so far this season.”

The former England international went onto predict a 1-1 draw for this weekend’s clash in Yorkshire.
