Who is Rúben Amorim? Age, career statistics and win rate of Sporting CP boss amid next Wolves manager links

Sporting CP boss an early contender for Molineux vacancy. Bruno Lage sacked after 2-0 Premier League defeat to West Ham.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are beginning the search for a new manager and could potentially appoint their third Portuguese head coach in succession.

Sporting CP boss Rúben Amorim is thought to be an early contender to take over the Molineux hot seat following Bruno Lage’s sacking on Sunday.

Lage, who had been in charge since June 2021, was relieved of his duties after a 2-0 Premier League defeat to West Ham United at the London Stadium.

As speculation about who will succeed the former Benfica gaffer continues, here is everything you need to know about Amorim including his career statistics and win rate as a manager:

Who is Rúben Amorim?

Rúben Amorim is the current head coach of Primeira Liga side Sporting CP.

The 37-year old, who was born in Lisbon, began his managerial career in 2018 with Portuguese lower league side Casa Pia before taking over the B team of Primeira Liga side Braga.

He was in charge of Braga B for a little over three months before being promoted to the top job.

His time in charge at the Estádio Municipal was short but his record was exemplary, winning ten of his 13 games in charge without losing a single league fixture.

He also lifted the Taça da Liga during that time, the Portuguese League Cup.

That record led to Sporting paying €10 million to buyout his Braga contract and bring him to Lisbon in March 2020.

His first few months in charge saw him steady the ship Estádio José Alvalade with a fourth place league finish before guiding the Lions to their first Primeira Liga title in 19 years in the 2020/21 campaign.

He has also won two more Taça da Liga’s with Sporting as well as the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira (the Portuguese equivalent to the Community Shield) and also claimed individual recognition with 2021 Primeira Liga’s Manager of the Season.

He has carried his success in management on from his playing career where he is probably best remembered for his nine year spell with Benfica that saw him win three Promeira Liga titles and earn 14 caps from the Portuguese men’s national side.

Rúben Amorim managerial statistics and win record

Amorim’s combined win percentage between his spells with Braga B, Braga and Sporting CP comes to an incredible 72.54%.

The 37-year old has won 103 of his 142 games in charge including 85 of his 118 as Sporting boss.

From those 142 games, Amorim has been in charge of the losing side just 20 times.

His Sporting CP side has scored an astonishing 229 goals from his 118 games in charge, that’s an average of 1.94 goals per game.

How much would Rúben Amorim cost Wolves?

Amorim’s initial contract at Sporting CP continued a €20 million buyout clause and was due to expire in June 2023.

However, the Portuguese head coach signed a one year extension to that deal in March 2021 which contained an improved release clause of €30 million.

With 18 months remaining on that deal, the Molineux side may or may not have to meet that fee but are certainly going to have to pay a substantial amount for his services.
