Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly keen on signing Watford star Giorgi Chakvetadze this January.

The Old Gold, eager to add depth in attacking midfield, are said to be keeping a close eye on Chakvetadze’s progress in the Championship.

The 33-time Georgia international, four times an appearance maker at UEFA EURO 2024 in Germany, has become one of Watford’s most important players. Chakvetadze, signed from Slovan Bratislava last February for £2.1 million after an initial loan move, has contributed two goals and six assists in 50 matches for the Hornets.

He may not stay much longer, however, as it’s been reported by The Sun that Wolves have listed Chakvetadze as a ‘top target’ ahead of the January transfer window. Wanderers are said to believe that the 25-year-old can play a key role in keeping the club in the Premier League following a difficult start to the new season.

As Chakvetadze only signed a new five-year contract recently, it’s stated Watford would want up to £20 million to let their number eight depart Vicarage Road. It’s up to Wolves, then, to decide if the player is worth such a hefty investment, especially as the defence needs reinforcing much more than the attack.

Gary O’Neil has regularly spoken about the frustration of not having deeper pockets at Molineux, too, so it would come as a surprise if the Old Gold can suddenly splash so much cash on a player yet to make the step up to the Premier League. That’s not to say Chakvetadze definitely won’t sign, but it’s likelier Wolves will seek a defender first.
