Birmingham City tipped to 'use riches' to re-sign former star striker - and he's 'open' to summer transfer

Birmingham City have the chance to boost their squad this summer when the transfer window opens

Birmingham City are back in the Championship and will be looking to make an impact next season. They were relegated from the second tier last year after finishing in the bottom three. The Blues went down with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town.

Chris Davies was subsequently brought in as their manager and he has done an impressive job with the Midlands outfit. They have won the League One title at the first time of asking. Prior to joining his current club, Davies had spells on the backroom staff teams of the likes of Celtic, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Birmingham City mentioned as potential next destination for Che Adams

Birmingham could ‘use their riches’ to try and persuade Che Adams to re-join them, as detailed in a report by EFL Analysis. The Blues will get the opportunity to bring in some new faces this summer. Their financial power in the transfer market has been well documented over recent times.

Adams, 28, joined Torino last year but is being linked with a return to England already. He has adapted pretty well to life in Italy and has scored nine goals in all competitions, eight of which have come in the league. However, his future in Serie A is up in the air right now and he is said to be ‘open’ to leaving.

The Leicester-born man made his name at Sheffield United from 2014 to 2016 after rising up through non-league. Birmingham then took a punt on him and he became a key player for them up top. He went on to score 38 goals in 123 games altogether.

Southampton came calling in 2019 and lured him up to the Premier League. The forward found the net on 49 occasions in 191 outings for the Saints. He helped them get promoted from the Football League last year but decided to leave afterwards for a new experience abroad.

Where would Che Adams fit in at Birmingham City?

Landing Adams would be a statement of intent by Birmingham. It would be a surprise to see him drop back into the Championship, especially as he is playing the Italian top flight. He may want to come home though and joining the Blues would be an exciting new challenge.

If they brought him in, he would give the Blues more quality in attack. He would offer them something different going forward and his pace and power can cause defenders real issues. Adams would battle it out with the likes of Jay Stansfield, Alfie May and Lyndon Dykes for a place in their starting XI.

Birmingham owner Tom Wagner has had this to say about their recruitment plans recently: “If we have the headroom, we’ll do it (break their transfer record). We’ll see. I think at the end of the day, a lot of it is thinking about what do we spend this year versus what we spend in future years? Where’s the talent? What’s the price? Where’s the value? All of those are questions that can’t be answered until the window opens, but you know we do have high ambitions and at the same time we will be seeking great value. I think we did an exceptional job with that last summer and I think we’ll do a very good job with it this summer.”
