Birmingham City preparing 'huge offer' to blow Rangers out the water and land key transfer target

Birmingham City have already secured their promotion back to the Championship

Birmingham City have won the League One title at the first time of asking. They will now be looking to show what they are all about in the Championship next season. The Blues have the chance to bring in some new players this summer to bolster their ranks.

Chris Davies has done an impressive job since taking over last year. The former Tottenham Hotspur number two has managed to gel their squad together and has achieved his first target of getting back to the second tier. He is a head coach with a lot of potential and will be eager to prove himself at a higher level now.

Birmingham City eye Kwame Poku transfer swoop

Birmingham are ready to offer Peterborough United attacker Kwame Poku £30,000 a week in wages to blow Rangers out of the water, according to a report by Football League World. The Blues are keen on luring the winger to the Midlands at the end of the campaign. He helped the Posh win the Vertu Trophy this year under the guidance of Darren Ferguson.

Poku, 23, has made 30 appearances in all competitions this term, 26 of which have come in the league, and he has chipped in with 12 goals and 11 assists. He is out of contract in late June and is yet to put pen-to-paper on an extension at London Road. That means he is due to become a free agent in a matter of months.

The Ghana international, who has one cap under his belt, started his career in non-league with spells at Cray Wanderers and Worthing. He was then thrown a Football League lifeline by Colchester United and spent two years with the U’s. Peterborough swooped in for him in 2021 and he hasn’t looked back since.

Would Kwame Poku suit Birmingham City?

Birmingham could see Poku as someone to add more quality to their attacking department. He is someone who has proved himself in League One and needs to test himself at a higher level. If the Blues got him, he would give them something different going forward.

Peterborough chairman Barry Fry told the Peterborough Telegraph recently: “A Championship club tried to force a deal through for Kwame in January, but he was injured at the time and they didn’t offer anything like what we wanted. They were just trying to get ahead of the game as they knew there would be many more clubs after him in the summer. He is the best player in League One after all. Celtic and Rangers have been at most of our games this season, but I don’t believe Kwame will go to Scotland. He will more likely sign for a top end Championship club.”

Poku is a player with a lot of potential and will only get better down the line. The fact other teams like Rangers are also being linked prove he is someone who is highly rated in today’s market. Birmingham have a lot of financial power now so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they won the race for his signature.
