Aston Villa supporters were praised after their side's heroic Champions League win against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Former Aston Villa star Ashley Young described the atmosphere at Villa Park as ‘just electric’ after he was on hand to witness his old club claim a stunning Champions League win against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

The famous old ground was rocking prior to kick-off as fireworks and an impressive Tifo display with the banner ‘All our heroes are Villans’ provided a spectacular backdrop as Unai Emery’s side prepared to take on a Bayern side containing England captain Harry Kane. After some nervy moments in the early stages, Villa settled into the contest and thought they had taken the lead when Pau Torres saw a goal ruled out for an offside earlier in the play. However, there would be no stopping Villa in the second-half as, not for the first time this season, Jhon Duran came off the bench to score a stunning strike that proved to be enough to give his side a fine three points.

Speaking as part of the punditry team for TNT Sports coverage of the game, former Villa winger Young admitted he could hardly hear himself during the post-match celebrations and was blown away by the reaction to another memorable night at the famous old ground.

He told the broadcaster: “This is unbelievable. Just the scenes, the fans, look at them, the fans behind us, it’s just electric. During part of the second-half it went a bit flat. Jhon Duran comes on, scores an unbelievable goal again, he’s been doing it non-stop in the last few games, coming on and scoring these goals, I can’t even hear myself in here tonight.”

Young’s praise was matched by co-commentator Owen Hargreaves as the former Manchester United and England midfielder also praised the Villa fans and hailed Unai Emery for exposing a shortcoming in the Bayern setup.

He said: “It’s a magnificent performance and the fans were brilliant before the game. The players were exceptional, Unai Emery had a brilliant game-plan. We said before the game that the only Achilles heel for Bayern Munich was playing that high line and Villa did a brilliant job of exploiting it. What a night for Aston Villa.
