Drivers in Northfield were trapped in their vehicles due to the rising water level

West Heath Road in Northfield became submerged in flood water with cars and vans becoming stuck and drivers forced to escape to safety.

Paul Manning, who runs a flower stall on the road, had to move all is stock inside onto shelves or he would have lost the lot.

He said: "It happened so quickly, I have never seen anything like it. It was total carnage. I had a few minutes to get everything inside and above the floor or I would have lost it.

“I was trying to tell drivers to turn back for their own safety. One fella said he was a Deliveroo driver and was already late so he had to try."

He ended up getting stuck in the water, you wonder what goes through people's minds when something like this happens.

One Northfield resident, who did not want to be named, said: "It happened within minutes, suddenly there were cars stuck and people having to wade through the water.

"Our back fence collapsed and the back garden was like a swimming pool, what was mad was people were still trying to get into the Co-op despite its car park being like a lake, what can be that important to take such a risk?"
