Why was it originally six pence a pint?

The pub chain was to offer pints for six pence the UK, choosing this amount because this was the average price of a pint in 1952 - the year Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne.

Yet issues with charging this amount under licensing laws made the chain change the offer to free pints instead.
