Birmingham Phoenix have written themselves into the history books thanks to batter Will Smeed.

Smeed scored the first ever century in the still relatively new ‘The Hundred’ tournament as the Phoenix beat Southern Brave at a packed out Edgbaston.

Smeed scored an outstanding 101 runs from just 50 balls in what was an explosive innings.

Following the match, Will spoke to Sky Sports Cricket about how it felt to score the record breaking century.

He said: "It was obviously a great feeling coming off to the applause, but to win as well and the atmosphere at the end was amazing so that was the most important thing.

“Edgbaston is known for the crowd and the atmosphere, and it definitely lived up to its name.”

Will Smeed is a 20-year-old batter who plays his county cricket with Somerset. Born in Cambridge, Smead was signed up to the Birmingham Phoenix in April 2022.

What did Birmingham Phoenix captain Moeen Ali say about the match?

Moeen Ali, who returned to Edgbaston in county cricket earlier this year, said that it’s great to win matches with young players such as Will Smead in the side.

"The crowd certainly helps, and we’ve got some good players at a ground like this, who like batting here.

"It’s awesome. You want to be performing and winning but if you’re bringing through a few youngsters while you’re doing that it’s great. Will was good for us last year and Brookesy tonight with the ball was fantastic.

Birmingham Phoenix Men’s team have three home games of the 2022 group stage remaining.

These take place on Monday 15 August against Trent Rockets, Friday 19 August versus Northern Superchargers and finally Sunday 28 August against Manchester Originals.

All of these games are double headers, with the Birmingham Phoenix women’s team playing before each of these matches.

All matches in the 2022 season of The Hundred are available to watch live on Sky Sports Cricket which is a dedicated channel to The Hundred in August.
