Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters were left raging when referee Tony Harrington sent Joao Gomes off after just nine minutes.

The midfielder was dismissed for a lunge on Brentford captain Christian Norgaard in the middle of the park. VAR failed to intervene, forcing Homes to head down the tunnel for an early bath.

The Bees pressed forward with the man advantage and scored just before half-time through Neal Maupay. Wolves fans greeted the goal with sarcastic cheers of “1-0 to the referee” as they bemoaned the earlier red card.

To make matters worse, Wolves fans felt as though Mathias Jensen should have been dismissed for a similar incident on Tommy Doyle. However, the ref failed to book the Bees midfielder - leaving travelling supporters apoplectic.

A valiant second-half performance resulted in Doyle smashing a left-footed strike home to level proceedings after 64 minutes. Despite having just 28 per cent possession, Wolves held on with 10 men to ensure a replay at Molineux in a fortnight.

But the post-match reaction from fans centred around the early dismissal. One fan wrote on social media: “This is why the officials have no credibility. (They are) inconsistent and out of their depth.

“Gomes’ (was) never a red. If a yellow had been given it wouldn’t have been upgraded but Jarred Gillet on VAR doesn’t have the minerals to get a decision correct."

Another highlighted Jensen’s challenge, suggesting refereeing body PGMOL for inconsistency. The post read: “Still fuming about the stonewall red card that should have been given to Jensen for his stamp on Doyle. The ref may not have seen it but how was it not punished by VAR? The standard set by PGMOL is disgusting.”
