Leicester City appeal decision on points deduction confirmed to give West Brom clarity on relegation rivals

Relegation-threatened Foxes had lodged an appeal against their punishment for financial infringements.

Albion have received clarity in the fight against Championship relegation as rivals Leicester City lost out in their appeal against a points deduction.

The Foxes currently occupy the final drop zone position having struggled for form following the sanction by the English Football League in February.

Leicester were docked six points but confirmed they would appeal the decision to punish them for financial infringements relating to profit and sustainability regulations for a three-year cycle to June 2024.

But it was confirmed on Wednesday, with five games of the Championship season remaining, an independent commission had upheld the punishment.

It means Leicester’s points deduction will remain in place in full and provides relegation rivals like Albion with more clarity on the picture at the foot of the second tier table.

Leicester were initially charged by the Premier League in May 2025 following infringements relating to the 2023/24 Championship campaign, which ended in promotion.

The Baggies, resurgent on a six-match unbeaten run under James Morrison, are currently two places and four points clear of the Foxes.

Leicester have won just one league fixture since they saw off Albion with a last-gasp winner on January 5 in what proved to be Ryan Mason’s final match at the helm.

Former Birmingham, Derby, Stoke, Millwall and Oxford boss Gary Rowett was appointed in February in a bid to inspire a turnaround but he has managed just a single victory in nine games.

The other club separating Albion and the drop zone, Portsmouth, are one point clear of Leicester and three behind the Baggies. They do, however, boast a game in hand - a home clash against second-placed Ipswich next Tuesday.

A Leicester statement read: "With the matter now at an end and five games of the season remaining, everyone at the club is fully focused on the matches in front of us and on shaping the outcome of our season through our results on the pitch.

"We know this has been a challenging period, and we thank our supporters for the backing they continue to give the team.

"The responsibility now is to ensure these remaining games are approached with the focus and intent our current situation demands."
