West Bromwich Albion could break a long-standing and undesirable English Football League record this season.

West Brom are on track to smash the EFL record for the most draws in a single season following their bizarre start to the 2024/25 campaign.

The Baggies have become the draw specialists in the Championship, sharing the points in ten of their 18 league outings so far this term. Preston North End and Queens Park Rangers aren’t too far behind with nine draws apiece, while the next most is seven - shared by four sides.

For comparison, the most draws recorded by a team in a single EFL season is 23, achieved by three clubs. Exeter City managed to draw 23 times in the Fourth Division in 1987, while Hartlepool United and Cardiff City both recorded 23 stalemates in 1997/98. Norwich City saw spoils shared 23 times during the 1978/79 campaign, but that was in the top flight.

To match that figure, West Brom would need to draw exactly half of their 46 matches. As it stands, the Baggies have shared the points in 55.5 per cent of their games, so at the same rate it would level out at 25 or 26 draws come the end of the campaign.

Albion fans will be desperately hoping their side don’t continue on that trajectory as it’s been a tough watch so far this season, especially on home soil. West Brom have won just two of their eight matches at The Hawthorns, drawing five and losing one.

Merely seven goals have been scored in the eight home games, with just four of those coming for West Brom themselves. It’s safe to say the entertainment value hasn’t exactly been there but that could change this Sunday as the Baggies play host to Championship leaders Sheffield United.
