Leeds United have announced manager Sam Allardyce has left the club by mutual consent after failing to keep the Lilywhites in the Premier League during his short stay.

West Bromwich Albion are now in a nervous position as Carlos Corberan has emerged as the outright favourite to become Allardyce’s successor.

Formerly an Under 23’s head coach at Leeds, Corberan already has plenty of admirers at Elland Road and has a good relationship with the Yorkshire club.

At 3/1 odds at the time of publication, no other contenders are ahead of Corberan in the list of early favourites, leaving the Baggies quaking in their boots.

It emerged this week that Corberan has an exit clause in his contract, making it a fairly straightforward manoeuvre if Leeds want to reunite with the Spaniard.

Allardyce comes in as the second favourite but the Lilywhites’ final decision has already been made to not go forward with the experienced former England manager.

Corberan impressed as he did a splendid job to take West Brom from being relegation candidates to play-off contenders within the space of just a few months.

This could now come back to bite Albion, however, as the 40-year-old has proven himself to be one of the best managers in the Sky Bet Championship.

Although nothing concrete suggests Corberan is officially Leeds’ number-one choice as things stand, it could move very quickly.

The club statement announcing Allardyce’s departure suggests the Elland Road outfit want to make an appointment “within a couple of weeks”, leaving an anxious wait.
