West Brom schedule contract talks with £12m winger following Burnley ‘offer’

The latest transfer news as West Bromwich Albion arrange talks with a talented former Premier League winger.

West Brom have arranged discussions with Grady Diangana after the transfer window has closed to talk about the possibility of signing a new contract, Birmingham World understands.

Diangana’s current deal expires in just six months’ time and no offer has been made to extend as of yet. Since signing from West Ham United for £12 million plus add-ons in 2020, the Democratic Republic of Congo international has contributed 26 goals and 21 assists in 188 appearances for the Baggies.

New manager Tony Mowbray recently sat down with the winger to gauge his current mood and aspirations. The chat was a success as Diangana opened up on his desire to rediscover his mojo and he did just that in the recent 5-1 win over Portsmouth, scoring a brilliant brace.

The purpose of the conversation wasn’t to push the idea of a new contract just yet but Mowbray is hopeful the club can convince Diangana to put pen to paper. That said, it’ll be a difficult task to achieve that as the player would need to take a wage cut - or perhaps do so with the promise of a rise if Albion are promoted to the Premier League.

Fabrizio Romano reported last week that Burnley had offered Diangana a pre-contract ahead of the summer but the 26-year-old turned it down. Meanwhile, La Liga club Celta Vigo and Serie A side Parma are both said to have expressed an interest to Diangana’s representatives.

Speculation is likely to continue for a while longer still but the priority right now for the player, club and manager is on the upcoming fixtures against Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday. There’s a shared ambition to get Albion to where they belong - the English top tier - and those games are crucial.

“I had my one-on-one with Grady this week and didn't realise how intelligent he was, how articulate he was, he speaks four or five languages,” Mowbray told our sister publication, Express & Star.

“He wants to get better in training every day, he wants a coach to test him, it's so refreshing to listen to him talk. He's always been a player when I came with Blackburn or Sunderland, he was always the danger, we always had to stop him.

“He can dance on the ball, look-away passes, slip strikers in, he can score himself. He said he's written a few things down that I talked about, like the inner child. You have to find the inner child and let it come out and express your talent. I think he wants to play and be involved.

“It's amazing how strong he is, let alone how talented he is on that left side. I'm really happy that he's here, I hope our discussions inspire him to want to stay here and help this team get to the Premier League,” Mowbray continued.
