The 26-year-old quickly lost his place in the Villa starting eleven following the arrival of Lucas Digne from Everton and will now link up with the Magpies for the remainder of the campaign.

The left-back was voted players’ player of the year just last season, and joins the Magpies having played 19 games in all competitions this season for the claret & blue - scoring one goal and providing one assist.

Following Targett’s deadline day move to St. James’ Park, former Villa skipper Grealish sent a message to his former teammate on Instagram.

Posting a photo on the platform, Matt Targett wrote: “So proud to have signed for Newcastle United until the end of the season.
