Birmingham City hope to beat at least three Championship clubs to the signing of the Fulham star.

Birmingham City lead the race to sign Fulham star Jay Stansfield, according to reports.

Blues 'remain locked in talks" with Fulham over a £6m swoop for Stansfield, according to the Telegraph. Several Championship clubs are also reported to have shown interest but Birmingham are bidding to pull off a huge statement of intent."

Cardiff City have a 'tentative' interest, whilst Sunderland are long-term admirers. Hull City have also been paying close attention to Stansfield before this summer, and would entertain signing him on loan if he becomes available.

The 21-year-old is hugely popular among the supporter base after his performances last season. He got 12 goals and two assists in 43 games despite being in a team that was relegated from the Championship.

At the end of season dinner awards, he snapped up the majority of the awards, and a return to St Andrew's would be their biggest statement of intent yet following a summer transfer window that has already seen eight players signed, all for transfer fees.

Fulham are spending £35m on signing Emile Smith-Rowe from Arsenal, and so it will be interesting to see whether that will affect Stansfield's chances of breaking in to the first team at Craven Cottage. He was on the score sheet for Marco Silva's side on Saturday as they ran out 6-1 winners against Watford in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

At the end of last season, Silva said other than Birmingham's relegation, the loan at Birmingham was what Fulham had hoped for. He said that Stansfield would then get the chance to prove himself when he returned.
