A player that was on loan at Birmingham City last season won’t be joining a Championship club despite a trial period.

Former Birmingham City midfielder Andre Dozzell remains on the lookout for a new club after Sheffield United passed up on the opportunity to sign him.

The 25-year-old was on trial with the Blades this summer, and impressed boss Chris Wilder. He hasn't earned a deal at Bramall Lane however with The Star reporting that his trial has now come to an end.

Sheffield United play Blues' League One rivals Huddersfield Town on Friday (August 2) and Dozzell will play no further part. Chris Wilder said earlier this week that a decision would be made and now Dozzell is free to speak and train with any clubs as he is a free agent.

The Star were keen to offer a deal to Dozzell but are willing to let him speak to other teams, despite there being interest from the Premier League in Gus Hamer and the uncertainty over the future of Vini Souza.

“He knits it together in the middle of the park and is a very technical player,” Wilder said of Dozzell.

“He's had a career really based in the Championship so he's one that we're talking about. We wouldn't bring players in just to fill in slots for pre-season.

“It's a position that we feel we might need to fill, especially with Gus playing out on the left or Callum O’Hare playing left and Gus playing 10. Tom Davies has a few issues with his injuries as well, so we need numbers in all positions and competition.”

Dozzell was made a free agent after his contract with QPR wasn't extended. He spent the last six months of his contract on loan at Birmingham City after being signed by Tony Mowbray. His spell at St Andrew's started off well but following a change in management, his opportunities were limited. Dozzell made 10 appearances in total for Birmingham, scoring one goal.
