Birmingham City sign £15m winger and £3m Leeds United starlet as AI predicts mega summer transfer window
Birmingham City could make five significant signings this summer, according to artificial intelligence.
Birmingham are approaching what’s set to be a pivotal transfer window as they look to build on their world record-breaking 2024/25 League One title-winning season with a return to the Championship.
Chris Davies’ side will be eager to hit the ground running in the English second tier with another promotion - to the promised land of the Premier League - being eyed. A second successive rise up the divisions is unlikely as the Championship is notoriously difficult to get out of but Birmingham will give it their best shot.
To have a good chance of being competitive, chairman Tom Wagner could sanction some mega transfer deals, just as he did last summer. Blues are expected to rake in revenue that can compete with the three teams being relegated from the Premier League, so nothing is stopping Birmingham from splashing the cash.
Who could Blues sign, then? Well, central defender Phil Neumann has already joined on a free transfer from Hannover 96 and there have been strong links with Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku, also a free agent this summer. Birmingham are understood to be looking out for a striker, an attacking midfielder, a winger, a versatile midfielder and a goalkeeper, so it could be a busy window.
Birmingham City’s summer transfers predicted by AI
Although a few named targets are being speculated, there aren’t many, and, as a result, Birmingham World has decided to enlist the help of artificial intelligence to try and work out what direction Blues may head in this summer.
Grok, X’s very own AI tool, has been of great use in the past, so we asked the robot for a hand again by asking who Birmingham should sign this summer. Its suggestions were varied, with some bold and some reasonable. Here’s a full run-through.
Anfernee Dijksteel (Middlesbrough, free): Continuing the trend of free signings, Blues could snap up the signing of right-back Dijksteel, or at least Grok reckons they should. The 28-year-old, a nine-time Suriname international, played 33 times in the Championship for Boro throughout 2024/25, scoring three goals. Dijksteel could provide solid competition for Ethan Laird and Alfons Sampsted.
Tom Fellows (West Brom, £15m): Albeit ambitious, Grok thinks Blues should make a £15 million bid to sign Fellows from local rivals West Bromwich Albion. The 21-year-old winger has been linked with a move to the Premier League after notching four goals and 14 assists in 45 Championship matches in 2024/25, so it would be a very tricky move to pull off. Stranger things have happened, though, and Blues’ project is certainly attractive.
Mateo Joseph (Leeds, £3m): Signed from La Liga club Espanyol three years ago with the view to becoming a future star, Joseph has struggled to properly break through at Elland Road. The 21-year-old striker played just 1,270 minutes in the Championship this season just gone, scoring three goals. He’s been brilliant at Spain under-21 level, though, as he’s netted five in six caps. Birmingham should sign him as a breakthrough star, Grok suggests.
Hayden Hackney (Middlesbrough, £10m): Doubling up on Boro, Grok thinks Blues should attempt to bring in versatile midfielder Hackney, who can play pretty much any role in the centre of the park. The 22-year-old has just enjoyed his best season to date as one of Michael Carrick’s first names on the team sheet. He’d likely cost in excess of £10 million due to his importance, but he could be worth it.
Sam Tickle (Wigan, £6m): Third place in the League One Golden Glove race this season, Tickle could be a shrewd goalkeeping addition. Backup shot-stopper Bailey Peacock-Farrell has really struggled and is likely to move on, so Blues need a replacement to compete with Ryan Allsop. Tickle, who is reportedly available for around £6 million this summer, is Grok’s named solution.
