And Ludwig Augustinsson has become the latest, adding depth at left-back after arriving on loan from Sevilla.

Augustinsson will back up Lucas Digne and Ashley Young, with Gerrard now blessed with options on the left side.

But who is the left-back, and what can he offer to Villa? We take a look below.

Who is Ludwig Augustinsson?

Augustinsson is a 28-year-old left-back from Sweden.

He grew up in Stockholm, and his family has a sporting background, with his father a former Sweden’s first division, while his mother was an international volleyball player.

His brother is also a player, with Jonathan Augustinsson playing for Rosenborg.

Interestingly, Augustinsson is strictly tee total, and he has previously dabbled in modeling work.

His career so far

Augustinsson began his career with IF Brommapojkarna back in Sweden, graduating to the first team in 2011.

He went on to have spells with Gothenburg and Copenhagen before leaving Scandinavia for Werder Bremen.

Augustinsson had already made his Sweden debut two years before his Bremen move in 2017, and he continued to impress at international level.

The left-back has made 46 appearances for his country to date, and he racked up as many as 98 league appearances for Werder Bremen.

He caught the attention of Sevilla during his time in Germany, joining the La Liga club last summer.

Though, he didn’t overly impress at Sevilla, making 19 La Liga appearances before being sent out on loan to Villa.

It is worth noting that Sevilla disappointed as a whole last season, but generally, Augustinsson didn’t do enough going forward.

Strengths

Augustinsson is a defender first and foremost.

He is generally composed in making challenges and very good at keeping his eye on the ball, timing his move when defending one-on-one.

Augustinsson does take some risks on the ball, liking to make clever turns on the ball to get out of sticky situations.

Tackling is his biggest strength, but attacking is not, or at least he has not shown the best of that side of his game.

Augustinsson can deliver a nice, left-footed cross, but he is by no means a wing-back.

He has played left midfield previously, but he is more of an old-fashioned left-side midfielder when operating in that role.
