Poland booked their place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after beating Sweden 2-0 in the qualification play-off on Tuesday night (29 March).

Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash, who was born in Slough, switched international allegiances from England to Poland five months ago so he could represent his grandparents’ country.

Goals from captain Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski secured the Poles’ place in Qatar next winter, and denied Zlatan Ibrahimovic the chance to play at a World Cup with Sweden for the first time since 2006.

After Poland’s victory, Cash posted a picture on Instagram with the caption: We’re going to the World Cup!!!! ❤️🇵🇱🇵🇱 What a night!”

Former Villa captain Jack Grealish and current Villa skipper Tyrone Mings then sent messages of congratulations to Cash.

Grealish wrote: “Well done geez.”

And Mings wrote: “Cash man 💜 congrats mate.”

Following the game, Cash and his Poland team mates were clearly enjoying the World Cup celebrations, as the Villa right-back also posted a hilarious message on Twitter, writing: “Wow Polish vodka is too strong.”
