Aston Villa made it through to round three of the Carabao Cup after a 4-1 win over League One side Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday evening.

Dion Charles had given the claret and blue a bit of a scare when he put the home side in front midway through the first-half but goals from Douglas Luiz, Danny Ings (pen), Lucas Digne and substitute Leon Bailey ensured it was Steven Gerrard’s men that progressed in the competition.

The result wasn’t as convincing as the eventual scoreline suggested with the Villans struggling for large parts, especially throughout the first-half.

Response to the result has been mixed from fans and it ranges from the rational to the irrational... but that’s why we love football.

Here’s a snippet of some of the reaction from the claret and blue faithful.

What Aston Villa fans have been saying

@mahomezs: “leave gerrard mcginn and mings in bolton, loan out archer and tim 10 minutes against bolton’s b team isn’t enough he’s stunting their development”

@aluke73: “Comments on here are embarrassing .. Some fans don’t deserve our club”

@PatDavis5835: “Regardless of the result we struggled, still same issues lack of ability and skill. No tactical thought process. Players can’t make a simple few yard pass”

@Harry_VTID: “End of the day it’s a good result but Archer Buendia and Bailey all deserve to start the next game over McGinn Coutinho and Watkins”

@DRichardCornish: “Win 4-1 in a tough tie away and the fans still whinge. Villa Twitter is toxic.”

@Nick_Hill81: “Guys, we were awful. Again. First half was an embarrassment. We need so much time on the training pitch. Formation, pressing, chance creation, finishing. All severely lacking. First goal was a fluke, second was offside, we’d have been dead and buried by half time in the Prem.”

@jakecarless97: “State of the replies on this considering we had the biggest win on the night Villa Twitter is the most fickle, weird place”

@dale_villain: “Made hard work of that, uninspiring first half and needed a bit of luck with the penalty then we found our groove and Prem class/fitness took over in the end to see the game through. Not the best of performances but as said job done. #AVFC”
