Aston Villa midfielder Leander Dendoncker could be afforded the opportunity to return to Belgium as the club look to move him on before Friday's deadline.

According to HLN Sport journalist Kjell Doms, Anderlecht are hoping to bring back Dendoncker to The Constant Vanden Stock Stadium. Their biggest rival to re-sign him is UD Las Palmas, who have already signed Oli McBurnie and Scott McKenna this summer.

Another Belgian football journalist Sacha Tavolieri claims that Dendoncker would be 'keen' on the move as Anderlecht look to make a central/defensive midfielder their final bit of business in the summer transfer window.

Dendoncker began his career with Anderlecht and had spent five seasons in their first-team. During his time in his native Belgium, he made a total of 171 appearances, and celebrated winning the Belgian Pro League in 2017.

Aston Villa want to move on Dendoncker, as well as the versatile Diego Carlos as they want to free up funds to sign Feyenoord star Lutsharel Geertruida, who will cost them in the region of £30m. A hamstring injury to Matty Cash has seen them enter the market for a right-back, and the Dutch defender is believed to be their number one target ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.

Dendoncker, who was signed for a reported £13m when Steven Gerrard was in charge, has only been used five times by Unai Emery, and the Belgian does not feature in his plans. He was loaned out to Napoli last season, but had limited playing time there.

Wolves transfer insider Dave Azzopardi who runs TalkingWolves, has poured cold water on the rumours, and has stated they are not interested in re-signing Dendoncker. They are instead closing in on signing Andre from Fluminense in a deal worth €22m plus €3m add-ons.

Dendoncker of course came to England when he joined Wolves on an initial season-long loan deal in 2018 in what was their first season back in the top-flight. His move was made permanent as he joined for €15 million, and he ended up making 159 appearances, before being sold to Villa in the late summer of 2022.
