Aston Villa announced the surprise signing of Chicago Fire centre forward Jhon Duran on Monday afternoon, as Unai Emery’s side beat the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United to his signature. The Villans revealed that an agreement had been reached to sign the 19-year-old, though the club did not release any details of a fee or contract length.

This information has now been released by an array of journalists, however, with reliable Colombian reporter Pipe Sierra the first to confirm that the initial fee would be $18 million (£14.8 million). This could rise by a further $10 million (£8.2 million) with add-ons, bringing the total cost to roughly $28 million (£23 million).

The same report states that the player is set to arrive in Birmingham today (January 16) before completing medical examinations and signing a contract until June 2028. Duran, who has been linked with plenty of top sides across Europe recently, is set to become Unai Emery’s second signing after Alex Moreno, a left-sided player from Real Betis.

The new man in the dugout has been very vocal about wanting to add depth to his squad, particularly on the wing, but Duran is an out-and-out centre forward - so he is probably not the last signing of the window. The Colombia international is set to offer competition to the existing group at Villa Park, including Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings.

Villa have lacked a consistent goalscorer this campaign, with Ings currently top of the charts with six and Leon Bailey in second with four. It would perhaps add too much pressure to rely on Duran right away, but his acquisition will certainly excite supporters.
