The 91-cap Republic of Ireland international is back in the coaching game in England.

Former Aston Villa midfielder Glenn Whelan has joined the coaching staff of Wigan Athletic.

The Latics were on the search for a new first-team coach following Tom Huddlestone’s departure to Birmingham City.  They have moved quickly, and have appointed Whelan, who has landed his third coaching opportunity.

He began coaching in the summer of 2022, where he was appointed player-coach at Bristol Rovers. Whelan combined that role with helping out with the Republic of Ireland under-16s team.

Following Joey Barton’s dismissal in October, and Matt Taylor’s appointment in December 2023, Whelan left Bristol Rovers. He has obtained the UEFA Pro Licence, which is the highest qualification a coach can achieve, and worked with the Republic of Ireland national team, where he reported to Man United legend John O’Shea.

“I feel absolutely honoured to have joined Wigan Athletic,” said Whelan to the official club website.

“It’s a fantastic Football Club, and the existing project is really exciting, and something that I cannot wait to be a part of.

“I would like to thank Shaun Maloney for providing me with the opportunity to continue my coaching career with the Club.

“His coaching philosophies align with my own, and I am hoping I can use my experiences - both as a player and a coach - to help the players as much as I can.”

Whelan had a 22-year playing career which saw him mainly play in the Premier League, though he did have spells in the Championship and League One. He arrived at Aston Villa in 2017, having had a long spell at Stoke City, where he helped the Potters remain in the Premier League for nine seasons after joining from Sheffield Wednesday.

During his time at Villa Park, he made 73 appearances, helping them win promotion via the Championship play-offs in 2019. Whelan was at Hearts for a spell, but departed and left to work under Joey Barton at both Fleetwood Town, and Bristol Rovers.
