Supporters have hailed Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez a genius for a gesture in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Manchester United. The Argentine, who returned to the side after a head injury, seemingly made a direct contribution to Villa’s second goal.
Making it 2-0 within just 11 minutes, Lucas Digne fired a free-kick up and over United’s wall and was, rightfully so, called a genius himself. But, unbeknownst to many in the ground, another quick thinker was lurking in the background.

Moments later, Villa Park erupted as Digne’s effort swung into the top right-hand corner. Although Martinez didn’t touch it himself, his slight intervention seemingly helped the ball reach the right destination - the back of the net.
The Red Devils did manage to get their own back just before half time, as Luke Shaw’s shot from outside the area deflected off Jacob Ramsey and looped over Villa’s man between the sticks. It was to no avail, though, as Ramsey scored his own at the other end just after the break and the score remained as it was for the rest of the clash.
Taking to social media after the game, Martinez celebrated Villa’s famous victory; the first home win over United in 27 years. “Proud of the lads today! What a performance by everyone! Fans were incredible today too,” Martinez said.
