Aston Villa have reportedly ‘reached an agreement in principle’ to sign a defender from one of their Premier League rivals.

According to Football Insider, Jan Bednerak could be on his way to the Midlands club from Southampton before the window closes.

The Polish international is thought to be a replacement for Diego Carlos who is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an injury sustained in the 2-1 victory over Everton earlier this month.

Here is what is being reported about Villa’s move for the Southampton defender:

Aston Villa ‘closing in’ on Southampton defender Bednarek

As per Football Insider, Aston Villa have reached an agreement in principle to sign Southampton defender Jan Bednarek.

The website reports that it will be a loan-to-buy offer for the 26-year old and that the club “have made progress on a deal” over the last 24 hours.

Bednarek has been with the Saints since 2017 and has made over 150 first team appearances, having previously been with Lech Poznań in his native Poland.

In the same year he won his first cap for the Poland men’s national team and has gone on to represent his country on 42 occasions.

It is also claimed that the player has agreed personal terms with Steven Gerrard’s side and could now sign early next week with Bednerak understood to be a replacement for the injured Diego Carlos.

The Brazilian, who was signed this summer, suffered an achilles injury in the 2-1 win over Everton and could potentially miss the rest of the Premier League season.

Villa paid a reported £26m to Sevilla for the defender who has been one of five summer signings so far.

Philippe Coutinho made his loan move from Barcelona permanent while Boubacar Kamara joined on a free from French Ligue 1 side Marseille and Robin Olsen was a £3 million signing from Roma in the Italian Serie A.

The Villains also added Ludwig Augustinsson on loan from Seville.
