Aston Villa play host to West Ham United on Sunday afternoon as they hope to propel themselves up the Premier League standings.

The start of the season has been a mixed bag for Steven Gerrard’s team, who have picked up just three points out of a possible nine.

An opening weekend defeat to newly promoted side AFC Bournemouth was followed by a splendid 2-1 win over Everton on home soil, but things came back down to earth again last weekend as the Villans lost 3-1 at Crystal Palace.

This time out though Villa are back on home soil and so better fortunes could be set to follow. It helps, too, that West Ham themselves have really struggled of late.

David Moyes’ men have lost all three of their matches so far and they’ve done so without scoring a single goal. The most recent of their defeats was a 2-0 home disappointment against Brighton.

Despite being selected for the 2pm Sunday afternoon kick off slot that regularly sees matches televised live, unfortunately Aston Villa vs West Ham is not one of those.

Sky Sports will instead be airing Wolves vs Newcastle at 2pm on Sunday. Not all is lost, though, as highlights will be available for Sky Sports subscribers on the Sky Sports app around 15-30 minutes after the final whistle.

Extended highlights and analysis will also be shown on BBC Match of the Day 2, which airs on BBC One at 10.30pm on Sunday 28 August.

What is the team news ahead of Aston Villa vs West Ham?

It’s likely Steven Gerrard will field a very different looking side to the one put out against Bolton midweek, with those rested in the cup tie probably seeing a return.

There are just two injuries for Villa to contend with, but one is a very key player. Diego Carlos will be out for a considerable period of time after rupturing his achilles, so he won’t be available this weekend.

Recent loan signing Ludwig Augustinsson faces a late fitness test after suffering a tweak to his knee.

For the visitors meanwhile, West Ham have a triple-up of defensive issues, some of which are worse than others. Recent signing Nayef Aguerd is set to be sidelined with a twisted ankle, but late decisions will be made for Craig Dawson (hamstring) and Vladimir Coufal (face).
