Aston Villa have had a campaign that only a few would have imagined as they battle for Champions League football.

Unai Emery brought European football back to Villa Park this season after going on a good run when he replaced Steven Gerrard in 2022. The Villains are in the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League and currently hold a place in the Premier League’s top four.

They have Spurs looking over their shoulder with a three-point gap between them and the North London side have a game in hand but it's a good position to be in. Man United meanwhile are nine points behind in sixth and also have an extra game to play.

All of what has been achieved so far has been on the backdrop of losing several key players to serious injuries. Emi Buendia and Tyrone Mings' campaigns ended in August whilst Villa were dealt a blow when Boubacar Kamara suffered the same fate they did with an ACL injury back in February.

Such a campaign must have players that are leading the charge and there’s one obvious name. According to WhoScored, which is a well-reputed website that specialises in football statistics, Ollie Watkins is their best player this term.

Watkins comes out with a respectable 7.32 rating from his performances in all competitions this season. The 28-year-old has got 16 goals and 10 assists this season and has earned the man of the match award on six occasions. As to where he ranks in the whole of the league, he is 10th, with the nine before him all involved in the title race or the battle for the top four.

He is one of three players with a rating of 7.00 or higher. Douglas Luiz who has played 2,424 minutes this term has a rating of 7.15 with three Man of the Match awards. Brazilian international Luiz has played a part in 14 goals this season, finding the back of the net nine times and registering five assists.

John McGinn who has donned the captain's armband a few times this term has won the same amount of Player of the Match awards and has a slightly lower rating of 7.07. The 29-year-old has got nine goal contributions this term with six goals and three assists.

Unfortunately, there has to be a player with the lowest rating and the player currently with the lowest rating is Tyrone Mings. The 31-year-old is rated at 6.08 though he has only played one game this season and had to be stretchered off after 77 minutes.

Three players who left the club this season do have a worse rating than him though. Cameron Archer who made one substitute appearance is 5.89, Jaden Philogene at 5.91 and then Bertrand Traore who departed for Villarreal at 5.98.
