Emiliano Martinez faces an uncertain future at Villa Park

Europa League finalists Manchester United and Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid have expressed a keen interest in signing Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the summer transfer window.

The Argentinian international has been heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park in the summer transfer window and has only fuelled speculation regarding his future by bidding an emotional farewell to supporters during their final home game against Tottenham Hotspur last Friday night.

The 32-year-old was a subdued figure in the post-match celebrations of a key victory over the Lillywhites as Villa successfully took the race for Champions League qualification down to the last day of the season, and was seen crying on the pitch when he went over to greet supporters.

Emiliano Martinez faces uncertain Aston Villa future

Aston Villa are expected to cash in one at least one senior first team player to help raise funds which can help them comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability measures.

This comes as something of surprise baring in mind the club’s progress in the Champions League by reaching the quarter-final and the fact that they’ve already cashed in on the likes of Jhon Duran, Jaden Philogene, Douglas Luiz, Diego Carlos and Moussa Diaby in recent transfer windows.

The 32-year-old has lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia, but talkSPORT believe Martinez would prefer to stay in Europe and compete in the Champions League. Atletico boss Diego Simeone is a big admirer of his fellow Argentinian while the World Cup winner has also been on United's radar for some time.

The Spanish side have Jan Oblak between the posts and could act to replace him if the 32-year-old moves to Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Andre Onana, who has endured a miserable second season at Old Trafford could depart this summer, amid interest of his own from the Middle East.

Aston Villa set asking price for Emiliano Martinez

Emiliano Martinez has enjoyed five fantastic seasons at Villa and remains one of the best in the business. For this reason, it’s understood the club will seek a figure of upwards of £40m to sell Martinez to a rival.

The former Arsenal man only recently signed a contract extension with Villa until 2029 which means the West Midlands side won’t be forced to sell the goalkeeper on the cheap.

Aston Villa face Manchester United at Old Trafford in the final game of the season in what could potentially be Martinez’ final ever game in a Villa shirt.
