Aston Villa’s third and final signing of deadline day is on the verge of completion.

Aston Villa have struck an agreement to sign Axel Disasi from Chelsea in a dramatic turn of events late on deadline day.

The Villans were thought to be out of the race for Disasi - and a source close to the club told Birmingham World as much at around 6pm - but an eleventh-hour U-turn is set to see the player make the switch to Villa Park after all.

The Telegraph reports Villa have a full agreement in place to sign Disasi on loan until the end of the season. It’s understood the defender agreed personal terms last week, so that won’t be an issue whatsoever. Medical tests will now be conducted and contracts finalised.

Although there are only less than three hours remaining in the window, a deal sheet can be applied for if Villa get the necessary paperwork done by 11pm. It’s a race against time, but one Unai Emery’s side are hopeful of winning.

Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, have made several attempts to sign Disasi - with one as recent as late this afternoon and ongoing until this latest update - but the Frenchman insisted on Villa. It’s a blow for Ange Postecoglou and a significant boost for Emery, who finally gets his man after Chelsea gave in to lower their significant demands.

How would Axel Disasi fit in at Aston Villa?

Disasi’s arrival would come as a welcome boost to Villa’s defensive depth following Carlos’ sale and the injuries suffered by both Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings. Pau is out for another five weeks or so with a broken metatarsal while Mings hobbled off during the recent 1-1 draw with West Ham United.

Pace isn’t Disasi’s strong point but the Frenchman is mightily strong and - at 6ft 3in - dominates in the air. His presence from set pieces should be a great aid, especially in Mings’ absence. One downside of Disasi’s game, however, is the fact he’s very right-footed and Villa ideally needed a left-sided centre-half.

Disasi joined Chelsea from AS Monaco for a reported €46 million (£38m) fee in 2021 but his minutes have restricted since the arrival of Enzo Maresca, who has afforded the 26-year-old just four Premier League starts so far this season. Disasi was left out of the Blues’ matchday squad to take on West Ham this evening, with his future uncertain.
