The West Midlands boasts some seriously talented exports, from movie stars and musicians to world class football players.
Recently, we’ve had a look at the famous faces - actors, musicians and even politicians - who were raised in and around Birmingham. Now, we’ve decided to take a look at the famous celebrities who grew up in nearby Walsall.
Many famous people grew up in the Black Country town which has plenty to offer. It’s steeped in history as is known as the leather capital of Britain. Bits, stirrups, buckles and spurs have been made locally in the town for centuries, and from this lorinery trade developed the manufacture of saddlery and leather goods for which Walsall is famous.
And the town also has its prestigious football club, Walsall FC, of course.
A number of actors, sportspeople and musicians all come from the area. With this in mind, we’ve taken a look at the most famous people who are from Walsall - let’s take a look:
1. Noddy Holder
The legendary Slade front man was born in Walsall. Known for his unique and powerful voice, Holder co-wrote most of Slade’s material with bass guitarist Jim Lea including “Mama Weer All Crazee Now”, “Cum On Feel the Noize” and “Merry Xmas Everybody”
2. Mike Ashley
The controversial former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley was born in Walsall and grew up in Buckinghamshire. The retail entrepreneur and chief executive of Frasers Group Plc (formerly Sports Direct) is said to be the 61st richest person in the UK with an estimated net worth of £2.718 billion Photo: Steve Bardens
3. Jorja Smith
The singer songwriter was born in Walsall. Her debut studio album, Lost & Found, was released in 2018 to critical acclaim, and peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart.
4. Goldie
Born in Walsall, Goldie became well known for his pioneering role as a musician in the 1990s UK jungle, drum and bass and breakbeat hardcore scenes.
