Investigation completed into cause of fire at Morrisons in Birmingham

Around 60 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze at the Edgbaston Morrisons store yesterday

The West Midlands Fire Service has completed an investigation into the cause of a major fire which broke out at the Morrisons store in Hagley Road.

The fire service said the blaze, which took hold on the roof of the Edgbaston store overnight on Saturday September 3, was ‘accidental’.

A tweet read: “The incident involving Morrisons on the Hagley Road, Birmingham has been confirmed as accidental by our fire investigation team. Traffic management is still in place and assistance being provided.”

More than 60 firefighters and eight crews from Ladywood, Highgate, West Bromwich, Woodgate Valley, Billesley, Hay Mills and Sethwick were in attendance to tackle the blaze. No injuries were reported following the fire. but there were concerns over structural damage to the store.

The store was closed yesterday while firefighters dealt with the incident and to assess any damage to the store.

The fire also resulted in travel disruption, with sections of the Hagley Road being closed and the tram service in the area also being suspended.
