Recently, we’ve had a look at the famous faces - actors, musicians and even politicians - who were raised in and around Birmingham. Now, we’ve decided to take a look at the famous celebrities who grew up in Harborne.
Many famous people grew up in the Birmingham districts which have plenty to offer. Harborne’s village feel makes it a great place to raise a family, with the nearby public and private schools in Edgbaston – as well as its own schools, namely Harborne Academy, being a great option.
A number of actors, sportspeople and other famous faces all come from the areas. With this in mind, we’ve taken a look at the most famous people who are from Harborne, including those who were born in the areas, as well as those who have lived there at some point during their lifetime.
1. Helen George
Harborne-born Helen is best known for playing Trixie Franklin on the BBC drama series Call the Midwife. In 2015, she participated in the thirteenth series of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing; she was paired with Aljaž Skorjanec, and finished in sixth place
2. Steve Gibbons
Steve Gibbons is a Birmingham musician and song-writer from Harborne. He is an English singer-songwriter, guitarist and bandleader. His music career spans more than 50 years. He was a big Elvis Presley fan and joined a band called The Dominettes in 1958. His music career saw him regularly touring with The Who with his Steve Gibbons Band which formed in the 1960s
3. Dennis Amiss MBE
The Harborne born cricketer played for both Warwickshire and England. Amiss is known for scoring the first ever century in ODI history, which was also his debut match
4. Ocean Colour Scene
Ocean Colour Scene, fronted by lead singer Simon Fowler, were formed in Solihull, but often played in Harborne in their early days. Harborne has a great collective of independent bars and was once the place of residency for the indie rockers - as well as Moseley Photo: Archive
