An official decision will be made on Friday

The West Midlands Combined Authority board is set to consider a substantial hike in fines for fare dodgers on the West Midlands Metro.

The proposed change would see the penalty increase tenfold, from the current £10 to £100, with a 50% reduction available if paid within 14 days. This move aims to bring the fines in line with those imposed by other tram operators across the country.

The increase was initially agreed upon back in 2021 but was deferred due to disruptions caused by Covid-19 and the Commonwealth Games. A forthcoming report to the board highlights that keeping the fines at their current level is not proving to be an effective deterrent.

Currently, no exact date has been set for when this new fine structure will come into effect.

The matter is due for discussion at the board meeting scheduled for Friday.
