The long wait for the Commonwealth Games is over, and the action is now well underway in Birmingham.

How long are the Commonwealth Games?

The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham got underway with the opening ceremony at the Alexander Stadium on Thursday, 28 July.

There will be a total of 11 days of sport through to Monday, 8 August which will also be the day of the closing ceremony - officially bringing the games to a close.

How many medals does Team England have so far?

Team England made a fast start to the tournament, with the first gold medal of the games coming early on Day One of competitions on 29 July.

This first gold was won by Alex Yee in the men’s triathlon, which was also the first gold medal of the games.

How many medals does Team Scotland have?

Team Scotland got off the mark in Birmingham with a bronze medal courtesy of Beth Potter.

Aileen McGlynn and her debutant pilot Ellie Stone picked up silver after coming through the qualifying round and semifinals – they were guaranteed at least a silver medal.

Team Northern Ireland made history thanks to Barry McClements who won his nation’s first ever swimming medal at the Commonwealth Games in the S9 100m Backstroke Final.

One sport which Team Northern Ireland head into Birmingham with high hopes for is netball, with the side qualifying for their third straight Commonwealth Games.

Coach Elaine Rice led the side to an eight-place finish at the Commonwealth Games four years ago in the Gold Coast and feels Birmingham will be a great opportunity for the players to test themselves against the best in the world.

“We are very excited and delighted to compete in our third Commonwealth Games, which is testament to our players’ hard work.

“We look forward to being part of the larger Team NI and supporting all our team members in their endeavours.”
