Man dies after being found unconscious in Pigeon Park in Birmingham city centre

The square around Birmingham’s St Philip’s Cathedral, known as Pigeon Park, has been sealed off after a man was found dead on Wednesday morning (19 October).

Police were called to the cathedral next to Colmore Row just before 8am after a man was found unconscious. Despite efforts to resuscitate the man, he died soon afterwards. Police are continuing their investigations today and the park remains sealed off (Tuesday, October 20).

Pigeon Park was sealed off while the force investigates the incident. The area is busy with commuters at that time of the morning. It has also been a place where homelss people gathered.

Police have launched an investigation. Officers cordoned off the popular park which sees thousands of people pass through it each day.

The Grade I-listed St. Philip’s Cathedral, which was built in 1715, was forced to cancel all services and other events scheduled for today.

What has West Midlands Police and Ambulance Service said about the incident?

A spokesman for the force, said: “We were called to St Philip’s Cathedral, Cathedral Square, Colmore Row, shortly after 7.50am this morning (19 Oct) following reports a man had been found unconscious.

“Sadly, despite the best efforts from our ourselves and ambulance colleagues who attempted to resuscitate the man, he has sadly died. An investigation is underway to determine what happened.”

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service added: “We were called by the police to a medical emergency on Colmore Row at 7.58am.

“Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and MERIT trauma doctors attended the scene to provide treatment to a man in a critical condition.”

What has St Philip’s Cathdedral has said about the incident?

In a Facebook statement, St. Philip’s Cathedral said: “Cathedral Square is currently closed due to an ongoing police incident. This means we are closed today and have cancelled all services and events.

“This includes our Divine Beauty guided tour, Holy Communion in traditional language and Choral evensong. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
