Man arrested on suspicion of murder of three-week old baby boy in Sparkhill, Birmingham

A man from Sparkhill has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a three-week-old baby boy was found not breathing and was later confirmed as deceased in Birmingham.

The 29-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene in Dovey Road, today (Tuesday, October 18). West Midlands Police were called just after 3.40am and confirmed that they found that the baby was not breathing. The little boy was taken to hospital by paramedics but pronounced dead a short time later.

A 26-year-old woman was also found at the scene with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening in the same incident. She was taken to hospital for treatment. Another woman was taken to hospital to be treated for a head injury, and has since been discharged.

Forensic teams were at the property this afternoon and the area was cordoned off by police as they carried out their investigations into the death of the baby.

Detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation. Inspector Neil Kirkpatrick, in charge of policing in the area, said: “This is a real tragedy and our thoughts go out to everyone involved. We’ll have extra officers in the area over the coming days to offer reassurance.”
