We were inundated with responses and now this week, BirminghamWorld readers have given us their thoughts on the areas of the city where you might hear the ‘poshest’ accents.
Yes, the Birmingham accent may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s certainly one of the most distinctive dialects in the UK, and Brummies are proud of their defining accent. But are there certain areas of Birmingham where residents have an accent that is perceived to sound ‘posher’ than others - although you may be surprised by some of the neighbourhoods suggested.
We asked readers for their thoughts on the areas in and around the city where you are most likely to hear one. We also spoke to residents in Birmingham city centre on the subject which you can see in the video above.
So, here are the 12 places of Brum where you will hear a posh accent, according to readers.
1. Bournville village
The home of Cadbury World is one of the most desirable areas of Birmingham. House prices in the area are higher than many other parts of city, largely due to the village trust. Those who live in the town, and employees, are expected to maintain their homes to a certain standard, and if you live within the trust’s management scheme, locals also have to pay a charge to the group, reportedly between £120 and £130 a month | david hughes - stock.adobe.com
2. Edgbaston
Edgbaston is home to some of the most expensive homes in Birmingham. Properties in Edgbaston had an overall average price of £324,196 in 2022 and it is one of the most affluent areas of the city. With the university also in the area, it was also mentioned by our readers | google
