Appeal to find home for 'Severous Snake' who has spent most of his life at Sedgley rescue centre

Severous is a 7-year-old reticulated python.

A Sedgley rescue centre is appealing to find a home for snake named after a Harry Potter character after he has spent most of his life with them.

‘Severous’ - or ‘Severous Snake’, who’s name is inspired by Professor Severus Snape from the books by JK Rowling - is around 7-years-old and has spent most of his life at Proteus Reptile Trust in Sedgley.

The reptile rescue centre say the reticulated python “has a typical retic attitude so needs an experienced home - either with retics or large snake species” and warned that “reticulated pythons can grow to extreme lengths holding the world record for the longest snake species, therefore we are looking for a very specialist home with a lot of room to house” as Severous has a lot of growing to do.

Reticulated pythons are the world's longest snakes, typically growing between 10 and 20 feet (3–6 metres) long, although exceptional individuals can reach around 26 feet (8 metres).

In a post on Facebook for World Snake Day earlier this month (July 16), the rescue centre said that Severous and other snakes are ‘misunderstood’ and not the ‘scary villains’ they are thought to be.

In a similar way, the character of Severus Snape is ultimately revealed to be a complex and misunderstood character whose actions were driven by loyalty and sacrifice, although he was initially looked at as a villain.

The post read: “Today we’re celebrating some of the most fascinating, misunderstood, and beautiful animals on the planet… snakes! To mark the occasion, we’d love to introduce you to the magnificent Severous, our Reticulated Python.

“Just look at those incredible markings! Sadly, Severous has spent most of his life here at Proteus while waiting for someone to give him the forever home he truly deserves. Like so many snakes, he’s often overlooked simply because people don’t understand them.

“World Snake Day is the perfect reminder that snakes aren’t scary villains. They’re intelligent, captivating animals that deserve love, respect, and the chance to thrive in the right home.”
