Two big Christmas markets are on in full steam in Birmingham city centre and there's loads to explore there. I could spend hours trying out the various stalls of food and drinks at the German Christmas Market and the Cathedral Square Christmas Market, but that's not all that there is to do in the city to be a part of the joyful season.
There are several family-friendly festive fun events taking place throughout November and December that cost nothing to enjoy. From live music and more markets to meeting the man of the hour - Santa - and his friends or enjoying a light switch-on with hundreds of people to share the joy - you won't want to miss out on any of these.
There are interesting trails to follow, grab gifts for loved ones, and eat some tasty food along with hot drinks or jugs of beer. So, grab your family and friends to head out and make memories together. Here are 11 free things to do in and around Birmingham:

1. Explore the German Christmas Market
There are several Christmas markets to enjoy this winter and the German Christmas Market is the biggest one in Birmingham city centre. 2. Join the Elf Academy and Santa’s Letter Writing Workshop at Gracechurch Shopping Centre, Sutton Coldfield

3. Go on Jewellery Quarter's window trail
Walking about in the historic neighbourhood of Jewellery Quarter is a treat on any given day but for Christmas, you can join the window trail- where you’ll discover a unique community of designers, makers and independent retailers nestled amongst over 200 listed buildings. 4. Watch the Touchwood Solihull Lights Switch On
On Saturday 25 November, you can witness some more Christmas joy at Touchwood Shopping Centre in Solihull when they launch its Christmas festivities, hosted by Phil Oldershaw and with a special guest appearance from local musical artist Bellah Mae. You can witness the light switch-on from 12.30pm until 5pm and that's not all. There will be a variety of performances from the Snowman and the Snowdog, as well as the arrival of Bjorn the polar bear and the launch of Santa’s grotto. The day’s celebrations will also include the Touchwood Christmas light switch-on, taking place between 4.15pm – 4.30pm, and will see Bellah Mae officially kick off Christmas at the Solihull-based shopping centre. | Touchwood
