Two big Christmas markets are on in full steam in Birmingham city centre and there's loads to explore there. I could spend hours trying out the various stalls of food and drinks at the German Christmas Market and the Cathedral Square Christmas Market, but that's not all that there is to do in the city to be a part of the joyful season.
There are several family-friendly festive fun events taking place throughout November and December that cost nothing to enjoy. From live music and more markets to meeting the man of the hour - Santa - and his friends or enjoying a light switch-on with hundreds of people to share the joy - you won't want to miss out on any of these.
There are interesting trails to follow, grab gifts for loved ones, and eat some tasty food along with hot drinks or jugs of beer. So, grab your family and friends to head out and make memories together. Here are 11 free things to do in and around Birmingham:

9. Participate in Christmas fun at The Exchange, Broad Street
On December 16, you can join a family-friendly festive fun planned by The Exchange. Personally, I loved visiting the vaults and this event with its range of free activities for all ages includes a session in the historic basement vaults. The programme includes sensory music sessions at 10am and 11am and storytelling workshops at 2:30pm and 3:30pm. There's also drop-in craft activities and a festive cinema experience in the basement vaults. | Google Maps

10. Listen to the incredible BCU Christmas Carol Service in Birmingham Cathedral
You join the BCU community for some festive cheer as the University's annual Christmas Carol Service returns to Birmingham Cathedral on Thursday 14 December. It is free to attend but booking is essential. The service will include traditional readings and carols led by musicians from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. There's also some mulled wine and mince pies after the service. The Birmingham cathedral is a sight to behold from inside and out and this event is not one to be missed. | senicer - stock.adobe.com

11. Meet Santa and Friends at Selfridges Birmingham
Take your little ones along to meet the star of the show, Santa, and his trusty elf as they make their annual appearance at Selfridges from December 2-24. You can catch them roaming around the store, spreading Christmas cheer. There's some other great activities planned for the little ones at the store like writing letters to Santa until December 4. | Jackie Davies - stock.adobe.com
