Black History Month 2022 is underway and events will be taking place throughout the coming weeks in Birmingham.

Several of Birmingham’s museums will be hosting events to mark Black History Month, including at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

The Black History Month events in Birmingham officially got underway last month with a launch event at the Birmingham Hippodrome.

Here is what you need to know about what events are taking place at which museums across the city.

When is Black History Month 2022?

Black History Month is an annual event which takes place throughout October each month with the aim of celebrating black contributions to society and culture.

Black Heritage Walks Network tour: Black History is Birmingham

October 5-22

The tour will be led by Black Heritage Walks Network CIC who have created ten unique walking tours within Birmingham, showcasing black culture and heritage.

The walks start at 12pm and will take about 90 minutes, please wear comfortable shoes. They are free and come on a first-come-first-served basis with no booking required.

Blacklash: Racism and the Struggle for Self-Defence

This exhibition is free to enter and has been running at the museum since the end of April and will finish on October 30.

On the exhibition, a Birmingham Museums said: “From the mid-’80s and over a period of two decades and across some of the UK’s major inner-cities, Mukhtar Dar documented the struggles of Asian and African Caribbean communities against the pernicious and pervasive tidal wave of street and state racism.”

Black Tudor Society with Dr Onyeka Nubia

October 8

Renowned and respected historian and presenter Dr Onyeka Nubia is to give a talk on the Black Tudor era society.

A Birmingham Museums spokesperson said: “Dr Nubia is the leading historian on the status and origins of Africans in pre-colonial England from antiquity to 1603.

“He has developed entirely new strands of British history which includes Africans in Ancient and Mediaeval England.”
