Wolves strike transfer exit agreement with League One club as £1m attacker gets reward for fine form

Wolves have agreed a winger transfer with a League One club.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reached an agreement with League One club Stevenage over the permanent exit of winger Chem Campbell.

The Old Gold have let Campbell join Stevenage for free but, as reported by our sister publication the Express & Star, Wolves have agreed a 30 per cent sell-on clause. That means that Wanderers will be due nearly a third of any profit Stevenage make on a future sale.

It’s never ideal to lose a player for free but Wolves have done well to secure the sell-on clause as Campbell has the potential to become a decent player. Wanderers always knew that but the forward was never quite good enough to feature for the senior team on a regular basis.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Reading and did well, scoring five goals and providing three assists in 39 League One games. Campbell also impressed in the FA Cup as he scored two in two matches, while he added two assists in one Vertu Trophy appearance.

Reading may be disappointed that they weren’t able to sign Campbell on a permanent basis after his successful loan spell but the player himself won’t mind as he’ll be continuing in the English third tier. It awaits to be seen if he has the talent to make it at a higher level but Wolves will be hoping he does as they’ll be likelier to rake in proceeds from that sell-on clause.

Campbell isn’t the only player leaving Wolves for free this summer as first-teamers Craig Dawson and Pablo Sarabia have run down their contracts. Then there are reserve players Stan Amos, Justin Hubner, Testimony Igbinoghene, Aaron Keto Diyawa, Lucas Kibrya, Filozofe Mabete, Josh Nyakudya and Matty Whittingham who will all be departing Molineux.

Wolves to conduct huge summer squad overhaul

Now the season is over and Wolves survived relegation by a comfortable 17-point margin, the club can look ahead to next campaign without guilt. Vitor Pereira had the winter window to sign the likes of Emmanuel Agbadou, Marshall Munetsi and Nasser Djiga, but he’s yet to have a full summer to properly make his mark on the squad.

The 56-year-old head coach is expected to hold talks over extending his Wolves contract and he’s bound to be backed by the board in the transfer market as a result. He will have money to spend, too, as Matheus Cunha has left for a record £62.5 million fee and Rayan Ait-Nouri has joined Manchester City for £33.6 million.

Quite a squad overhaul could take place despite Wolves’ recent resurgence, beginning with signing suitable replacements for Cunha and Ait-Nouri. It’s the first summer for Pereira to get fully involved in transfer business, after all, with the Portuguese manager eager to guide the Old Gold to bigger and better things after a strong start. That’s certainly possible, though Wanderers know they must get their business spot on to beat so many other teams gunning for a top-half finish.
