Tottenham Hotspur will have to look elsewhere after Wolves secured a midfielder contract agreement.

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes has committed his long-term future to the club, signing a new five-year contract despite interest from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham.

The Brazil international has been rewarded for his fine form with improved terms that will see him stay at Molineux until June 2030, while the club holds the option to extend by a further year.

Gomes has already played 80 times for Wolves since signing from Flamengo for around £15 million in January 2023. In that time, the 24-year-old has gradually established himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising central midfielders.

Head coach Vitor Pereira is delighted to get the deal over the line as he believes Gomes is already an important player and can be a star man in the future.

“I’m very happy because Joao is a team player. He gives every time 100 per cent, in training, in the games, and he has the quality to help this team and this club to make the next step,” Pereira said.

“At the end of the game he’s given everything for the team, defending, attacking, supporting the teammates, and this is what we need in our team, this is the spirit we need at this club. We must come to Wolverhampton with this hunger, this spirit to help the team, help the club to grow up.

“He’s very important because he’s a midfielder with physicality and the power to run for 90 minutes, and he’s young. He has big potential and can be a top player.”

Joao Gomes not the only Wolves star to extend contract

The news of Gomes signing a contract follows the confirmation that central defender Yerson Mosquera has also put pen to paper on a fresh deal.

The Colombian, who played the first five Premier League matches of the season before suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee against Aston Villa, is seen as a key player for the future.

Mosquera’s significant setback at Villa Park in September has kept him out for over six months so far and he will remain sidelined for the rest of the current campaign. He’s expected to return in the summer, though, and could have an involvement at the start of 2025/26, when Wolves will hopefully still be in the Premier League.

The new deal sees Mosquera ditch his original contract end date of June 2026 for the much-extended June 2030, while the club holds the option for a further year. The Colombia international, currently valued at £6.7 million by Transfermarkt, is determined to succeed at Wolves and agrees he can become an important member of the squad.

“I’m really happy to stay with Wolves,” Mosquera said: “It’s a really good opportunity because I need to get back and I have another chance to play here.

“It was an easy decision for me, because from the first time I spoke with them, I wanted to stay here. I wanted to renew my contract because I want to play for Wolves.

“Now, I need to stay focused, I need to be careful, because my injury was really big, but now I feel confident. I feel really good and I’ll take my time to be back.

“I’m very appreciative of the club, because they’re giving me another opportunity. I know it’s not easy to do this in my situation, but they believe in me, that is the most important thing.

“I will be back stronger, for sure, I promise the Wolves supporters, the club, and I will give 100 per cent when I’m back.”
